Harry's story
Before anything else, Harry is someone with an enormous heart. Those of us who know him have seen, time and again, how naturally he gives his time, his energy and whatever he has to the people he cares about. He is loyal almost to a fault, quick to trust, eager to help and far more comfortable believing the best in people than looking for reasons to doubt them. For us, that is where his story has to begin.
Harry has always wanted the best for the people around him. The same kindness, loyalty and trust that make him who he is can also leave him exposed when the wrong people are close enough to influence him.
The Harry we know
Harry is the kind of person who will show up for somebody without asking what he gets back. He will give away his last bit of money, spend hours helping someone through a problem, or put his own needs aside if he thinks somebody close to him needs him more. He has always wanted the people around him to be happy, safe and looked after.
That generous nature comes with a deep need to trust the people he lets into his life. Harry is autistic, and for him trust can be very literal. Once somebody is accepted as a friend, he can take reassurance at face value, struggle to recognise manipulation while it is happening and find it difficult to imagine that someone he cares about might deliberately place him in danger.
We are not suggesting that autism makes somebody incapable of understanding right and wrong, or that autistic people are automatically easy to manipulate. We are talking about Harry as an individual: someone whose loyalty, social understanding and desire to belong can make the words and approval of trusted people carry enormous weight.
He often follows the tone of the people around him. If something is repeatedly presented as normal, safe or manageable by people he trusts, his instinct is to believe them. If they tell him they have everything under control, he is far more likely to accept that reassurance than to assume they are using him.
How things changed
Over time, some of the people Harry trusted were not the kind of people he believed them to be. What he saw as friendship, loyalty and belonging gradually brought him closer to behaviour and decisions that became more serious, more dangerous and increasingly difficult to step away from.
We believe his trusting nature was repeatedly reinforced rather than challenged. He was reassured, encouraged and made to feel that what was happening around him was under control. The people whose judgement he relied on were also the people normalising the risks in front of him.
Eventually that led Harry into extremely serious illegal activity. From what we understand, he was told there was no real danger, that the situation had been handled and that he would make it back safely. Those assurances mattered to him because they came from people he trusted and wanted to believe.
We believe Harry was drawn into something much larger than he properly understood and was left carrying a level of risk that others were able to keep at a distance. In our view, the qualities that made him so dependable to the people around him — his loyalty, willingness to help, need for reassurance and tendency to trust — were also the qualities that made him useful to people acting in their own interests.
None of this is written to pretend that serious decisions do not have consequences. It is written because context matters. Harry did not wake up one day wanting to become involved in serious crime. We watched someone who had always wanted to help and belong become pulled further and further into a world shaped by people he trusted, until the consequences became far bigger than he had ever imagined.
Where things stand now
Harry is now detained in Cambodia and facing an extremely serious legal situation. Based on the information available to us, he could face a sentence of up to 20 years in prison. He is dealing with that reality far from home while also living with a serious skin condition that requires proper care.
What matters now is that Harry has proper legal representation and that the full circumstances surrounding what happened can actually be examined. His autism, the way he processes trust and social pressure, the influence of the people around him, the evidence in the case and the wider context all need to be understood rather than reduced to a single moment or allegation.
We cannot undo the decisions that brought him here. What we can do is make sure he is not left to face the consequences without a proper voice, proper representation and people fighting to make sure the whole picture is heard.
Anyone who genuinely knows Harry will know the person we are describing. He is not perfect, and this appeal is not asking anyone to pretend that he is. He is a deeply caring, trusting person who got lost around the wrong people and ended up in a situation more serious than anything he was equipped to understand or manage. We want to give him the chance to be seen as a whole person, not simply as the worst situation he has ever found himself in.
